Conferring Honorary Degrees for two eminent personalities Former Minister and Ambassador AR Munsoor and Retired Professor of Colombo University Prof. Sarath Wimala Bandara Kotagama for their invaluable services to the mankind were the highlights of the 10th General Convocation of South Eastern University of Sri Lanka held at BMICH on Sunday.
President Maithiripala Sirisena who participated as Chief Guest on the session II of this Convocation honoured conferring Honorary Degrees, Doctor of Science (Honoris Causa) and Doctor of Literature (Honoris Causa) upon Prof. Sarath Wimala Bandara Kotagama and Former Minister AR Munsoor respectively.
Altogether 1112 Grandaunts from the Faculties of Arts and Culture, Management and Commerce, Applied Sciences and Islamic Studies and Arabic Language conferred in Sessions I and Session II in addition to the conferment of 247 Grandaunts from the External Degrees in Session III.
President Maithiripala Sirsena in his convocation address said that he was happy to participate in this significant occasion where the grandaunts have come from all parts of the Island with their parents and members of their family as this is a memorable and significant day in their life. He also expressed his happiness that vast changes are taking place in the field of higher education in the rural sectors too and our parents understand the reality in the sphere of education. This trend should follow. Meanwhile President passed his remarks on the protest march and the allegations against the Government that are being staged by the Undergraduates too and he said that this shows that we are very much liberal as we are fully aware of their reasonable demands. Finally he wished all those who are conferred with the Degrees. Finally Medals were also awarded to those who have achieved the highest standards of Excellence by the Chancellor Prof Achchi Mohamed Ishaq after the announcement of the Vice Chancellor Prof MMM Najim.
Governor /Easter Province Austin Fernando who participated as Chief Guest in Session I delivered the key note address while Session III was attended by the University Grant Commission's Vice Chairman Prof. PSM Gunawardena as Chief Guest and delivered the convocation address.
Ministers Rauf Hakkeem, Lakshman Kiriella, Daya Gamage , State Ministers Mohan Lal Grero, Faizal Cassim and HMM Harees, Chief Minister Hafees Nazeer Ahamed, Ambassador for the State of Kuwait Khalid MM Bu Dhhair and Higher Officials from University Grant Commission were also present and graced the occasion. The notable feature of this Convocation ceremony was an unprecedented crowd of parents and relations of the grandaunts from all three communities from all parts of Sri Lanka were present even outside the premises of BMICH as the Hall and Gallery was full of guests and visitors.
Convocation Committee headed by Senior Lecturer Dr. AL Abdul Rauff under the guidance of the Vice Chancellor Prof. Najim worked right round the clock to make this event a successful and memorable one.
