South Eastern University Community celebrated the Sinhala/Tamil New Year in a fitting manner at River Bank of the University recently.
Vice Chancellor of the University Prof. MMM Najim attended the ceremony by participating as Chief Guest.
The program aimed at inter communal harmony and mutual understanding among students of different communities from all three religions began with the lighting of traditional oil lamp by the Vice Chancellor Prof. Najim followed by Director Student Support Service and Welfare Dr. A. Rameez and other Academic Heads.
The specially erected cadjan huts at the river bank side were full of students enjoying the sweets, kevum and other traditional "kiribath". It was a very nice moment to see Sinhala, Muslim students in Tamil huts and Tamil and Muslim Students in Sinhala Students huts enjoying the sweets and other food items. Traditional Games like pillow fight, breaking the pot, tug of war, musical chair and other interesting items were in the card and the students enthusiastically participated in the program. In addition the students and the Staff too participated in the "Quize" competitions.
The "Rabban Beatings and 'Onchili' Waram" were the highlights of the programme where the guests too enjoyed in beating rabans.
